Sampling in the Alps
European MonarPOP Project
The Ambient Air Dioxin MonitoringSystem Windselect+ is used in the EU project "MonarPOP".
In this project the transmission of dioxins and also PCBs and other POPs over the Alps is
measured in Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland for a
period of 2 years.
Active samplers, located on three peaks in Austria (Sonnblick), Germany (Zugspitze) and Switzerland
(Weissfluhjoch) aspirate the surrounding air and pass it through special filters, where pollutants are
percipitated.
An array of separate filters is used to distinguish between pollutant
impacts from different regions.

The Austrian Institute for Meteorology determines the travel route
(trajectory) of the incoming air masses. Depending on their origin, the sampled air is passing the corresponding
filters. Remote control matches filter
cartridges and trajectories on a daily base.
